Introduction

TSEDZANZIBAR is a comprehensive and up-to-date Zanzibar statistical database system that:

• Facilitates the systematization, storage and analysis of performance indicators in different thematic areas that are defined by the users.
• Allows for user-friendly analysis of data through tables, graphs, reports and maps options. The system allows the creation of global, regional, national and local maps, with up to 6 geographic levels.
• Allows the grouping of indicators in different frameworks, sectors and sub-sectors, by themes (poverty, disparities etc), by institutions, by sources, by international commitments and goals.
• Provides updated time-series as well as multiple estimates from various sources, disaggregated data down to village, by sex and urban/rural strata whenever these are available.
• Allows the creation, modification and merging of indicator databases without the need for specialized programs or technical support, the system contains a wizard that provides step by step orientation for these tasks.

The main objective behind TSED is to democratize access, use and dissemination of accurate data on a wide range of socio-economic indicators in a user-friendly manner. By doing this, it is hoped that the database, among other things, will contribute significantly to the promotion of the use of data in policy making, based on the evidence provided by surveys and routine data collection mechanism.

• Increase availability of information and indicators on progress and setbacks in the socio-economic situation of the country.
• Maintain updated and organized indicators with their corresponding information sources and data collection methodologies.
• Facilitate the analysis and visualization of disparities through thematic maps at regional, national and sub-national levels.
• Facilitate the dissemination of information on the socio-economic situation of the country through Internet on web version 7, CD ROMS on version 6.1, publications on posters.
• Increase availabilities of updated indicators and analyses on issues relevant to the country, e.g progress towards the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS).
• Strengthen the governments and counterpart’s capacity to organize, analyze and dissemination information at the national and sub-national levels.
• Allows the monitoring of international, regional and nation goals and commitments, e.g. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
• Facilitate the creation of common indicators and information systems for UN agencies, in the framework of the UN development assistance framework.
• Facilitate the formulation of policies in favor of development and poverty reduction.
• Facilitate the monitoring of initiatives to strengthen the responsibility of the private sector.
